SAWYER Descent Chart

Descent Chart

This line is descended from the 1st SAWYER who came to England w/Wm the Conqueror in 1066. A later descendant named Hugh SAWYER was granted a coat of arms in 1310 (i.e. by King Edward II r1307-27) for 'services rendered on the field of battle' while crusading w/King Richard I 'the Lionheart' r1189-99. Note: I watched a PBS program on Su 16 Jun 2013 on Highclere Castle ('Secrets of the Manor House'), filming location for the popular 'Downton Abbey' PBS series. They said its about 70 miles W of London and is currently occupied by the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, ggson of the famous 5th Earl who w/Howard Carter found King Tut's tomb in Egypt in 1929(?). They mentioned a Margaret SAWYER whose portrait sill hangs prominently there, so I did some research. It turns out she was the only dau of Sir Robert SAWYER 1633-92 who built Highclere (the structure before the current one), Attorney General of the City of London (more available online, do a web search). Robert's wife was Margaret SUCKELEY and they had 5 daughters (apparently the other 4 died before 1684?). Margaret m1684 Thomas HERBERT, 8th Earl of Pembroke and they apparently lived at Highclere (ancestors of the later Earls of Carnarvon). Sir Robert was the son of Sir Knight Edmund SAWYER of Heywood Lodge, Auditor of the Exchequer of the City of London. He was b1579 (or 1586-7) and d. 14 Jun 1676. He m1 Elizabeth PARKHURST and had kids Robert, Mary, Thomas, Elizabeth, George and Margaret. He m2 Anne WHITMORE dau of ?; she d1627. He inherited via his mother's HILL family an elite position as one of the few auditors of London and worked in the govt of King Charles I r1625-49, helping the king more effectively lay and collect taxes due. This Sir Edmund was a gson of my Sir Edmund b1540, heading the above chart. Edmund 'the auditor' was the oldest son of George SAWYER of Cawston, Norf. and his wife Anne HILL, dau of Elizeus HILL of Blofield, Norf. Finally, George was a son of Sir Edmund b1540 and Jane FISKE of Halesworth, England.
