Samuel H(olly?) SAWYER

Born: 02 Mar 1798 at Drowned Lands district, near Goshen, NY
Died: 28 Nov 1885 at Athens, PA

Father: Moses SAWYER
Mother: Eleanor HOLLY (1773-1828)

Spouse: Bethiah WELLS (1804-1881)

Children:

  • William W. (1830-1915)
  • others?

Samuel and his brothers John L. and Benjamin all migrated from Goshen, NY to the area near Waverly, NY and Sayre, PA. I don't know exactly when Samuel came, but John came in 1833 and Benjamin the following year. Samuel and Bethiah were married 17 Apr 1824, probably at Goshen. Perhaps Samuel's middle name was Holly, after his mother's maiden name? I don't have a bio on Samuel (yet), although information sent to me by Beverly Dann at the Waverly Free Library in Waverly, NY, indicates Samuel and his wife, Bethiah, are buried in the cemetery at Sayre, PA just off Frederick Steet, between Pennsylvania and Keystone Avenues. There are 4 Sawyers in that section:

  • Samuel (dates above)
  • Bethiah d. 21 May 1881 at 77 years old
  • William W. b. 12 Feb. 1830 d. 7 May 1915, I assume this is a son of Samuel and Bethiah
  • Susan F. b. 21 May 1881 d. 20 Mar 1895, perhaps a dau of William W.?

Other Sawyers buried in other sections of this cemetery are:

  • Anna R. (WEEKS) SAWYER, wife of H. SAWYER, b. 1879 d. 1911
  • G. F. SAWYER d. 1877 at 45 years old
  • Helen M. wife of G. F. d. 22 Dec 1909 at 63 years, 9 mos.
  • Fannie MURRAY (1854-1918)
  • James L. SAWYER (1847-1917)
  • Lillian SAWYER (1854-1943)

It seems likely that these SAWYERs are all descendents of Samuel and Bethiah, but I'm not yet sure how they all fit.
