DUNSMORE Index

At this time, the earliest known ancestor of this branch is Ross H DINSMORE b1578 Druminachie, Aberdeensh ... More information would, of course, be appreciated greatly.

At the Nanaimo, BC library (VIRL), I found 2 interesting books; one on "Warriors of Christendom" (Charlemagne, El Cid, Richard Lionheart, Frederick I Barbarossa) and the other a family biography on the BC DUNSMUIRs (i.e. builders of the famous DUNSMUIR Castle at Victoria). The family came from the Kilmarnock, Scotland area. Robert (1779-1835) and Jean (KIRKLAND d1832 in a cholera epidemic in Scotland) DUNSMUIR are the earliest. Then follow James (d1832 cholera) and Elizabeth (HAMILTON d1832 cholera) DUNSMUIR. Then Robert (1825-89 b. Scotland, came to BC 1851, hit it big, built Castle) and Joan (WHITE) DUNSMUIR. I'd guess my DUNSMORE's are probably of Scottish origin and may even be related to these DUNSMUIRs, since these (and other) forms of the name have often been conflated in history.

On the TV show 'The Practice' they mention a Boston, MA mental hosp. called Dunsmuir (or sounds like that) ... connected?

John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore

Su 12-11-16 An episode of Bill O'Reilly's 'Legends & Lies' discussed the important contributions made in the US Rev War by black soldiers, esp a RI regiment at taking 1 of 2 'redoubts' (other taken by French soldiers) near Yorktown, VA, which soon after forced Gen. Cornwallis to surrender there (by blocking British re-supply ships i.e. a siege). They mentioned that Gen Geo Washington was hesitant to allow blacks into the rebel army but relented (quietly) once he saw what they could do. The Brits soon did the same, offering black slaves freedom for fighting. They mentioned Brit ldr Lord Dunmore, Gov of VA.

Made me wonder if he might be connected to this line? My earliest MoorDUN b. 10-23-1787 at ?, VT and d. 5-23-1869 82yo at Lyme, NY (bur. Ontario, wife's family were loyalists, not sure about his, he m. Cynthia AVERY 1795-1822 27yo). He left the US c1783 for Yonge, Ontario. I found interesting wiki pages on the Dunsmore name, Lord Dunmore and also one for Lord Dunmore's War. He was b. 1730 at Taymouth, Scotland and d. 2-25-1809 79yo at Ramsgate, Kent, England, a member of the Scot peerage. He was the son of Wm Murray, 3rd EoD and wife Catharine NAIRNE and nephew of JM 2nd EoD. In 1745 Wm/John joined Bonnie Prince Charlie's 'rising' while JM 2nd EoD remained loyal to the Hannoverians. Wm was imprisoned at the Tower but freed by 1750 on conditions. By 1756 both he and his bro the 2nd EoD were dead and JM t/o as 4th EoD. In 1759 he m. Lady Charlotte, dau of Alexander Stewart, 6th Earl of Galloway [earldom created 1623, seat at Garliestown, later Kirkcudbright in SW Scotland]. They had 7 kids (4 daus, 3 sons):

1 Augusta m. Prince August Frederich son of K Geo III (but unauthorized by King)

2-4 3 more daus Catharine, Virginia and Susan [hmmm, omdhs site omits Virginia, DY?]

5 George Murray V of Dunmore b. 4-30-1762, d1836 74yo, inherited title from father

6 Lord Alexander Murray of Dunmore b. 10-12-1764

7 Lord Leveson Murray of Dunmore b. 12-16-1770

Mason-related site: www.omdhs.syracusemasons.com ... includes 'Grand Masters of England' chart (of which the EoD's are members). I found the sons here, wiki only showed 4 daus.

JM 4th EoD was named Gov. of NY 1770-1 (was he already living there or came from Scotland?), on 9-25-71 replacing VA Gov Norbert Berkeley, 4th Baron Botetourt, who d. in ofc. Once in VA he pursued his famous 'Lord Dunmore's War' against the natives of the western parts of VA (then extending far beyond today's borders into what's now WV, KY and OH), even writing a history of these wars. His attempts to raise colonist taxes for the wars led to conflict, notably w/Patrick Henry who in Mary '75 gave his famous 'give me liberty or give me death' speech at St John's Episcopal Church in Richmond, VA. That speech helped turned local discontent into a resolution in the local council to organize armed resistance to the British-backed local govt. On 5-3-75 rebels arrived at Williamsburg as Lord Dunmore escaped w/his family to his hunting lodge 'Porto Bello' to the west of town. By they caught up w/him there on 6-8-75, wounding his leg as he fled (w/his family) to the British warship HMS Fowey in the York River. From there Dunmore directed armed raids of rebel homes in the area, doing enough damage (and theft of guns, ammo and supplies) that rebel ldr George Washington himself said in Dec '75 that Dunmore must be either captured or killed. Then on 11-7-75 Dunmore famously issued a proclamation offering freedom to any slaves who joined his army against the rebels (upping the ante for the rebels, who'd already done the same). 800-2k took the offer by war's end. Dunmore's forces won the 11-17-75 Battle of King's Landing but lost the 12-9-75 Battle of Great Bridge, after which he and his army took refuge in British ships (an outbreak of smallpox wiped out most of the slave soldiers in the ship's close quarters, some speculating that Dunmore had purposely infected them, hoping it would spread to the rebels, hmmm?). Up to this point Dunmore had been fighting to maintain British rule of VA, but now he gave it up. But his parting gift was to order waterfront bldgs to be burned (rebels were using them to fire on his ships). The fire spread and consumed most of Richmond. Dunmore's ship headed to NY, but others of his fleet headed south, some to FL. Realizing he'd lost VA, he returned to the UK Jul '76 (but continuing to draw VA Gov pay til 1783, when Britain ack'd US indep). Dunmore was a Scot peer and was a member of the House of Lords from 1761-74 and 76-90. One source called him 'America's 1st villain', seeing the VA rebellion as the true spark of the American Revolution (v. 'April Morning' 1775). When he d1809 (wife d1819), he eldest son George inherited his title, becoming the 5th EoD. George's heir was Alexander (6th EoD) 1804-45 41yo who m. Catherine Herbert, dau of the 11th Earl of Pembroke (cf MargSAW.html).
