MALLORY Family

The MALLORYs have been traced all the way back to the time of William the Conqueror, apparently Norman in origin. After having settled by the 12C in Nun Eaton, Warwickshire, England, they seem to have moved N to the Swinford, Tachebrook Mallory and Kirkby Mallory regions of Leicestershire. Then in the 13C they moved even further N into (Walton) Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Cumberland. This suggests they identified more with the 'agricultural and rural' N than the emerging 'commercial and urban' S, dominated by London.

The 1st MALLORY to come to N America was ? ...

Much later, Mallorytown is a village in Ontario, Canada of about 240 people, 2 miles from the St. Lawrence River and in "Front of Tonge" township, Leeds County. It was named for Daniel (aka Nathaniel) MALLORY 1742-1808 66yo. Daniel and his wife came from VT in 1784 (just after the American War for Independence ended 1783) because he was a (British) Loyalist. He first settled at Mallorytown Landing, but shortly after moved to the farm now (in 1959) occupied by his grandson, Ira MALLORY. Daniel had 15 children, including Andrew.

Sir Thomas MALORY was a mid-15C landowner, knight and author the famous book 'The Death of Arthur' (Le Morte d'Arthur), which he wrote while in prison. Related to this line?

Most of this information came from Vera Gates HUTCHINGS, whom I met on the genforum boards and who has a DUNSMORE family history book with MALLORY information in it.

Other information was provided by 3rd cousin Diane EDLIN ("Tinnie" was her great grandmother), who compiled and forwarded information on the Edmund and Belinda (MALLORY) DUNSMORE family (family group no. 715), based on the 1880 MI census.

The wiki site for 'List of London Lord Mayors', they show the 1st was named 1189, with subsequent interesting names Sir Robt de ROS, Baron Kendall 1321, Simon de MONTFORT 1368, Sir Wm CAPELL 1510 (ACB? no, that was 17C), Sir Thomas MIRFYN 1519 (skinner livery), Sir Thomas SEYMOUR 1526, Sir Ralph WARREN 1536 (mercer livery), Sir Richard MALLORY 1564 (mercer livery, fit into above line?), Sir John GERARD 1601 (haberdasher livery), Wm STEWART 1721, James TOWNSEND 1772 (mercer livery) and #688 The Lord Mountevans 2015. No 2016 name is listed, but if there were it would be #689. See MargSAW for SAWYER as AG of London, i.e. different wiki list.
