The GBR source has a SAWYER entry on p. 879 which indicates that Roswell, like his father, was reared and educated in his native place. At the age of 18, he became captain of the "G. A.," a smack engaged in fishing at Montauk, and he belonged to this fleet for 5 years. The other vessels of which he was commander were: The "S. R. Packer," the "Almeda," the "Whistler," which he commanded for 12 years, the "Lucy E. Smith," and the schooner, "Mattie and Lena." In 1897 Roswell discontinued his life on the water and became the manager of the marine railway for the Robert Palmer Company (named for his uncle Robert?), and continued there until he resigned to become postmaster at Noank. In politics, Roswell was always a staunch supporter of the Republican party, and was more or less interested in public affairs for years. On 1 Jan 1898, he was appointed postmaster at Noank, and most efficiently and satisfactorily performed the assigned duties. For many years, he was an active in the Noank Baptist Church. He married Miss FITCH 19 Nov 1863.
