BOWMAN (BAUMAN) Family

This community was founded by Elder John GARBER, who came from PA or MD with his wife and 6 younger children in 1775/6 to "The Forest" near Flat Rock, VA. Other early settlers there were Michael WINE, who in 1782 came with two of Elder GARBER's older sons, Samuel and Martin, and also with Jacob MILLER, all with their families. These, along with Elder Christian MYERS, his wife Barbara (BURKHOLDER) and their 8 sons, who came in 1793, formed the basis of this Tunker community. By 1800, many other German families had joined them (some had been in the area since 1750): ANDES, BRANNER, HARPINE, HENKEL, HERMAN, HOLMAN, PENCE, ROUSH and ZIRKLE, virtually all from either Lutheran or German Reformed background. There had also been Quakers (e.g. MOORE) in the area very early (as early as 1738 for one Quaker meeting place at Smith Creek). Since he came in 1784/5 and apparently took a wife shortly after from among the Tunker community there (first child b. 1785), Elder Benjamin BOWMAN Sr.'s wife must have been from one of these families.
