The following exchange occurred on the NYSUFFOL rootsweb list on the family of Ezekial SANFORD and Hannah MITCHELL (m. 1679/80 Southampton):
Do any of you know of my other 6th gr grandmother Hannah MITCHELL and her parents, grandparents etc.? (copies following):
Hannah MITCHELL b abt 1658 d Southampton, Suffolk, Long Island, NY m. 1679/80 Southampton, Suffolk, Long Island, NY to Ezekiel 2) SANFORD [Robert 1) SANFORD & Ann 2) ADAMS] b 13 Mar 1648 Hartford, Hartford, CT d Southampton, Suffolk, Long Island, NY. They were parents of two children that I know of, born Southampton: 1. Abigail d 16 Aug 1766 Southampton, Suffolk, Long Island, NY m. 13 June 1712 Southampton to Edward 4) HOWELL [Richard 3), Richard 2), Edward 1)] and 2. Hannah b abt 1700 d Southampton, m. abt 1725 Southampton to Jeremiah 4) HOWELL [Jonathan 3), Edward 2), Edward 1)], Wilma Fleming Haynes (gencon@harborside.com)
Wilma, According to "The Sandford/Sanford Families of Long Island" By Grover Merle Sanford (Gateway Press, 1975) Hannah (Mitchell) Sanford, wife of Ezekial 2 Sanford, was a daughter of John and Jane (prob. Mills) Mitchell. "The Early History of Southampton, L.I., New York, with Genealogies" by George Rogers Howell (!887), says the Mitchell family lived in Bridgehampton from 1686 when John Mitchell of East Hampton bought 20 acres from Mary, widow of Samuel Mills. Howell does not have any info on Jane, the wife of John Mitchell. I doubt she really was a Mills. The recent article "Richard Mills, Seventeenth-Century Schoolmaster in Connecticut and New York" by Helen Schatvet Ullmann, CG (New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 154, April 2000, pp. 189-210) covers the Mills family of Southampton, and Jane does not appear. From me...
Hi All, I'm curious about this SANFORD/MITCHELL marriage, since I have a SANFORD line as follows:
1727-1820 SANFORD, Phebe - CASTLE, David
1704-17?? SANFORD, Jonathan - PLATT, Phebe
167?-17?? SANFORD, Samuel - BALDWIN, Hannah
I wonder if there's a connection between these SANFORDs. Anyone have a clue?
Thanks, Steve Sawyer
Hi Steve, I don't have a definite answer, but since a Baldwin genealogy says Samuel Sanford and Hannah Baldwin were from Milford, Connecticut, and "The Sandford/Sanford Families of Long Island" says Ezekial Sanford's father, Robert, had two brothers, Andrew and Thomas, who lived in Milford, I think it likely there was a connection.
