Mary Bella (B[A/U]LL) SAWYER

Born: 1651 at ? (probably Boston or Worcester, MA)
Died: 27 Feb 1750 at Lyme, New London, CT

Father: Isaac B[A/U]LL (?) (16??-1???)
Mother: Sarah PARKER (16??-1???)

Spouse: John SAWYER (1661-1705)

Children:

  • Edward (1687-1716)
  • Jacob (1689-17??)
  • Elizabeth d. 1732
  • Moses b. 1690
  • Joseph
  • George Wade
  • Isaac
  • James (1694-1771)

The wife of John is often shown as Mary Bella BALL, however it appears that her correct surname was BULL, perhaps the daughter of Isaac BULL. Isaac was from Boston, but lived in Worcester at the time of the wedding, 16 Jun 1686.

The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 7, page 70 states that John SAWYER married Mary BULL of Worcester and the presiding minister was Mr. William BRIMSMEADE, Minister of Marlboro, on 16 Jun 1686. This information was taken from Lancaster Records. The names of the children were taken from MA Probate Records, except Joseph, furnished by Fred SAWYER of Idaho, who left out Elizabeth. George WADE and Isaac appeared on Dean SAWYER's page, linked below.

In source 3, there is some information on the BULL family. On p. 391, under the entry for Stephen M. BULL, the following lineange is shown:

    1. Stephen M. BULL b. 14 Jul 1844
    2. John Springstead BULL b. 26 Nov 1809 d. 17 Nov 1876
    3. Isaac d. in Monroe
    4. John b. Hamptonburg, NY

This source also states that the founder of the BULL family in Orange County was William BULL, a native of Wolverhampton, England, born in February, 1689. In early manhood he accompanied his father to Dublin, Ireland, where he was apprenticed to learn the mason and stone-cutter's trade. By 1716 he had come to America and in 1718 he married Sarah WELLS. He and Sarah settled in Hamptonburg, named by him in honor of his old English home. Sarah was the first white woman to settle in Orange County. William died in Feb 1755 (at age 66) and Sarah 21 Apr 1796 (at age 102). I'm not sure how or if this BULL line is related to Mary, but it seems likely that some connection exists.
