Mariah was baptized in the Hillsborough Dutch Reformed Church of Raritan, NJ on 2 Apr 1775. Mariah and Abraham BROKAW were married in the Dutch Reformed Church at Raritan, NJ on 8 Jan 1792. At that time, her parents lived in Millstone, NJ.

The family remained in Somerset Hillsborough Twp., Somerset County, NJ until 1823, when Abraham, Mariah and 7 of their children set out for Ohio (to take possesion of land Abraham had received for his service during the Revolutionary War). They left 3 other living children in NJ. Caleb (son?) had preceded them to Ohio. This marked the beginning of the BROKAW "colony" in Ohio. On arriving in Ohio, they settled in Warren Twp., Jefferson County. After a little more than 2-1/2 years there, Abraham died and is buried there.

Soon after his death, Mariah and 5 children returned to NJ, leaving Jane, Abraham and Caleb in Ohio. In Mariah's later years, she lived with daughter Maria HART in Somerville, NJ. She died there and is buried in the cemetery on South Bridge Street. Beside her headstone is one for Abraham, but that stone is uncut since he is buried in OH.

Mariah's will, dated 7 Jun 1856, shows her as a resident of Bridgewater Twp., executor James W. TAYLOR, witnesses James TAYLOR and Cornelius WHITENACK.
