John married Phebe (or Phoebe, Phobe) CASTLE around 1782. She was born at Woodbury, CT July 20, 1766. She died at Schulyer Lake Oct 22 1842. John C STEWART served in Albany Company Militia, 2nd Regiment, under Col Abraham WEMPLE (these facts taken from "New York in the Revolution").

A228: John stated in his pension application (18 Oct 1832 in Richfield, Otsego County, NY) that he was b. 15 Jan 1763 in Norwich, CT and that his father, a seafaring man, died while he was quite young. He also stated that in 1777 he left Norwich and sent to Bennington, VT with his mother and there enlisted in 1780. Family records show he married Phebe CASTLE; she d. 22 Oct 1842 and he d. 15 Jul 1848.
A241: After John's father died at sea, John's mother remarried and moved to Bennington, VT with her new husband (and presumably took all her children with her). Phebe CASTLE was b. 20 Jul 1766. John enlisted 6 Mar 1780 under Capt. Tehan NOBLE in Col. Ira ALLEN's regiment and served six days on an alarm. He served 8 months from 4 May 1780 to 3 Jan 1781 under Capt. Jesse SAWYER, Maj. Ira ALLEN, in the defense of VT. He lived a short time in Kingsbury, Washington Co., NY and in 1787 he moved Otsego, Otsego Co., thence to Middlebury for 20 years, thence to Smithfield, Madison Co., NY for 5 years, thence to Cazenovia for a year or two, thence to Columbus, Chenango Co., for about the same time, and thence to Richfield, Otsego Co., where he remained. He and Phebe are buried in a cemetery at Schuyler Lake, NY about 20 miles south of Frankfort. David STEWART was granted administration of the estate in 1848. Children shown same as above, except Lucinda (b. 12 Oct 1803, d. 1 Jun 1842) and Lewis (b. 2 Aug 1806, d. 31 Jan 1879).
