- 11 Geo G 5 E H b. c1535 Sutherland d. 10-19-1576 Strathbogie, Aberdeensh (geni coa) was Lord Chancellor of Scotland and a major conspirator of his time, Sheriff of Inverness from 1556, captured 1562 and imprisoned at Kinneil House, attainted and sentenced to d. 1563, then imprisoned at Dunbar til m. of Mary to Darnley in 1565, when his lands and dignities were nominally restored. Allied w/James HEPBURN 4 E Bothwell (his bro-in-law) and joined Q Mary at Dunbar after Rizzio's murder in 1566. Became Lord Chancellor of Scotland 1567, joining Bothwell in plot to murder Regent Moray at Jedburgh. He signed the bond at Craigmillar Castle for Darnley's murder, and accomp Bothwell and Mary to visit Darnley before it happened. His estates were fully restored after Bothwell's acquittal in 1567. He even helped facilitate Bothwell's div from his sister! He witnessed the m. contract between Bothwell and Mary, then connived in Mary's capture, accomp her to Edinburgh but fleeing N after her escape. He joined the partisans at Dumbarton Castle, and after a temp agreement w/Regent Moray conspired for Mary's deliverance from Loch Leven 1567. When she esc to England 1568 he held all the N in alliance w/Argyll, but rcv'd Mary's orders to disperse. He made an agreement w/Moray at St Andrews 5-14-1569 to make up w/Morton, quell rebellion among his own (Geo's) allies and deliver a cannon from Huntly Castle, in return Moray would forgive all crimes against the King. But later, after this temp pause, the Marian civil war continued and Geo gained possession of Edinburgh Castle, held a parliament and captured Regent Lennox at Stirling. His bro Adam was his lt in the N, and fought for Q Mary in Aberdeenshire and the Means. In 1572 Geo came to terms w/Regent Morton. He m. Union of the Crowns, took part in plot for Morton's 1581 ex, signed Presby confession but still pushed for [RCC] Spanish invasion, but his treason was forgiven by James [V?] since RCCers were useful to counter tyranny Kirk and Eliz, also Huntly was always a fave, so pardoned. He m. 7-21-1581 Henrietta STEWART, dau of Esme S and Cath de Balsac, bringing him closer to French RCC influences. In Apr 1589 he raised a rebellion in the N, but was obliged to surrender. Involved in a pvt war v. E's of Atholl/Moray, stabbed E of Moray to death. Joined a plot to imprison the king, defeating royal forces under Argyll at B of Glenlivet 10-3-1594 in which Huntly esp. distinguished himself. But James blew up his castle at Strathbogie, forcing him to lv Scotland Mar 1595, secretly returning soon after. He finally submitted to James and the Kirk Jun 1597 and was restored to his estates that Dec. Created Marq Apr 1599 and in Jul, w/Lennox, appt'd Lt(s) of N. But the Kirk still distrusted him so he was confined to Aberdeen, and when summoned to Privy Council Mar 1607 instead fled to England to appeal to KoE James I. He was excom'd (by Kirk) 1608 and imprisoned at Stirling til he again signed the Presby confession Dec 1610 (insincerely, we can assume)! Accused of more RCC intrigues in 1616, he was made to sign again, refused, imprisoned at Edinburgh, but freed by James in Jun. When KoE Chas I t/o 1625, Huntly lost most of his influence at court, deprived 1630 of hered. sheriff-doms of Aberdeen and Inverness. Same year Gordon v. Chrichton feud broke out, in which Huntly's 2nd son Lord Melgum was burnt to d. either by treachery or accident (at Chrichton's house). Huntly ravaged their lands, was imprisoned Dec 1635 at Edinburgh til Jun 1636, his health ruined, d. at Dundee 6/13 en route to Strathbogie (after declaring himself RCC! i.e. a 'dead-ender').

They remained out of reach in exile, so he exacted this terrible vengeance on her, their kinswoman. Since Angus was Margaret D's dad, this was her aunt and must've shaken her (esp. since she was already in the Tower, having angered KoE Henry VIII w/her dalliance w/Thomas HOWARD, tLTP p75)
- 11 ? CAMPBELL of Skipness ... here's the speculative link between my known ancestors below and 'maybe' ones above ... seems likely that my line below connects in here somehow e.g. Archibald b. Do these fit together? If so, how?
For clues, here's a few notes on Skipness Castle, mostly from wiki...Skipness_Castle. Its on the E coast of the Kintyre Peninsula, at the tip of the 'elbow' about 1/2 way down that coast. It was built c1247 by Clan MacSween, fortified 1262 against Vikings. It was held by MacDonald Lords of the Isles til 1493, when were forced to forfeit it. It was then garrisoned in 1494 by royal troops during KoS James IV's suppression of the Isles. The CAMPBELLs acquired it in 1499, and Archibald C 2nd E of Argyll granted it to his younger son AC in 1511. Hmmm, this source says Walter (c. Archibald as shown above) C of Skipness was the 2nd husband of Janet D Lady Glamis. The 2 were imprisoned w/their infant son at Edinburgh Castle on orders of KoS James V in 1537 on trumped up charges of treason, sorcery ... All 3 were sentenced to death, but Walter attempted escape, falling to his death from the castle walls. Janet was later burned alive, but their son [name? dates?] was later released, inheriting the Glamis properties. Skipness C was besieged in 1646 (i.e. part of the English Civil wars of the 1640s) by the army of Alasdair Mac Colla, whose bro was k. during the siege. The castle was abandoned later in the 17C.

So Lucinda STEWART 12th cousin of Ada, same for JCS 4x removed, or John STEWART 11th cousin of Lord BYRON, same for JCS 5x removed.
Lord Byron (Geo G BYRON, 6 B B) 1788-1824 36yo is known not just for his poetry but also his personality and life story. Not only a genius (wit, satire) but a millionaire, hero, nobleman, sinner and beauty. He was b. into a tormented and tempestuous family. His dad, who d. when Byron was 3yo, nicknamed him 'Mad Jack'. He succeeded to the family title at 10yo, schooled at Harrow and Cambridge, began pub-ing poetry in his teens, and by 1812 [24yo] among the most famous poets in England. He m. (unhappily) in 1815, but exiled himself the next year (hounded by accusations of insanity and incest), never to return home. He spent time in Switzerland, but mostly in Italy, often w/Shelley and his wife Mary [author of Frankenstein] (see story in B&C.html?). Byron exploited the same fashion for things Scottish that 1st made Robt BURNS famous a generation earlier. There've been better poets, but none has surpassed Byron's personal influence; the 'Byronic hero' is still w/us - dark, moody, aloof, misanthropic, courageous, brilliant, tortured. He DY in Greece helping the cause of indep, tho of fever v. wounds, indeed he never saw combat, tho Greeks still name their sons Byron in his honor. 2 of his poems (So, We'll Go No More a-Roving and She Walks in Beauty) made it into Wm Harmon's 'Classic 100 Poems' (Columbia Univ, 1990/8, 360pp, bot Tu 8-14-18 FHL).
