Edgar SAWYER

As an infant, Edgar came west with his parents and settled on a farm near Waupun. He did not take to farming and left home at an early age. He operated restaurants for many years. In 1878, Edgar married Cepha FLETCHER (born 1858 at Bangor, WI). They later separated. In 1894 he married Lena DAHL (born 10 May 1874 in Schleisurg, Holsten, Denmark and died 06 Dec 1936 at Columbus, WI). After running eating stands at county fairs he came back to his restaurant at Waupun. At these fairs he learned of ice cream cones and making them. He brought a griddle for cone making with him. Thus he introduced cones to Waupun around 1906-7. He baked the cones on the griddle, shaped them by hand, packed them with ice cream and sold them for a nickel. They were immediately popular and have maintained that popularity for these many years.
