Douglas, AZ is in the far SE corner of the state, just across the Mexican border from Agua Prieta (cf DayTmr Feb 2018). It was named for mining pioneer Dr James D 1837-1918 b. Quebec d. NYC. The area was orig settled 18C by Spanish as Presidio de San Bernadino i.e. settled 1776, but abandoned 1780!? (hostile natives?) The US Army est. its Camp S B in the late 19C, and in 1910 built Camp D nearby. The town was fnd'd as a smelter for copper ore extracted from nearby Bisby, AZ. The orig co (name?) was fnd'd 1905 and the Copper Queen mine operated 1904-31 when it was bot by Phelps Dodge corp. They ran it til 1987 when it was closed (huge strike 1984?). In 1916 Pancho Villa threatened the town, thinking it had helped his foes in the recent battle of Agua Prieta. On 6-23-26 Canadian-American celebrity minister Aimee Semple McPHERSON was found collapsed on a road near Agua Prieta (after having disappeared from Los Angeles, CA, she claimed kidnapping ...).

Also, the Douglas Aircraft Co (DAC) was fnd'd 1921 in Santa Monica, CA by Donald Wills DOUGLAS Sr 1892-1981 88yo b. Brooklyn, NY d. Palm Beach, CA. He was the son of a cashier (no name given in wiki) who worked for Natl Park Bank. DAC merged w/McDONELL Aircraft Co in 1967 to form McD-D, which then merged w/BA in 1997. No info on ancestry at wiki.

A pamphlet from Protection Island in Nanaimo, BC harbor says it has a history of coal mining, w/an active mine there from late 19C to 1938. Aka Douglas Island (named for James D, 1st Gov of Vanc Island and BC), it was renamed PI in 1960 i.e. protects harbor from heavy seas. Today there are 350 full-time residents, many of whom commute daily via ferry to work/school. The island features beautiful beaches, forested parks and an abundance of birds and other wildlife. After KoS James IV invaded England and his army defeated, and he himself k. 9-9-1513 at the Battle of Flodden, his infant son succeeded him as James V. Scotland was thus again under a regency (as had mostly been the case there for over a century), a kingdom dominated by huge interrelated families, notably the STEWARTs, the DOUGLASes and the HAMILTONs (tLTP p4). Seems likely that Lady Mary D ties into that key ruling family somehow, possibly via Earls of Angus branch shown below?

She m1 John LYON, 6th Lord Glamis d1528 (see House of Angus chart in tLTP and in Douglas.html). Her 2nd m. didn't last long since she was ex 7-17-1537 by KoS James V, angry at how her bro (Archibald DOUGLAS, 6 E) Angus and the DOUGLASes had wielded power during his minority, then later defying him. They remained out of reach in exile, so he exacted this terrible vengeance on her, their kinswoman. Since Angus was Margaret D's dad, this was her aunt and must've shaken her (esp. since she was already in the Tower, having angered KoE Henry VIII w/her dalliance w/Thomas HOWARD, tLTP p75)

                    For clues, here's a few notes on Skipness Castle, mostly from wiki...Skipness_Castle. Its on the E coast of the Kintyre Peninsula, at the tip of the 'elbow' about 1/2 way down that coast. It was built c1247 by Clan MacSween, fortified 1262 against Vikings. It was held by MacDonald Lords of the Isles til 1493, when were forced to forfeit it. It was then garrisoned in 1494 by royal troops during KoS James IV's suppression of the Isles. The CAMPBELLs acquired it in 1499, and Archibald C 2nd E of Argyll granted it to his younger son AC in 1511. Hmmm, this source says Walter (c. Archibald as shown above) C of Skipness was the 2nd husband of Janet D Lady Glamis. The 2 were imprisoned w/their infant son at Edinburgh Castle on orders of KoS James V in 1537 on trumped up charges of treason, sorcery ... All 3 were sentenced to death, but Walter attempted escape, falling to his death from the castle walls. Janet was later burned alive, but their son [name? dates?] was later released, inheriting the Glamis properties. Skipness C was besieged in 1646 (i.e. part of the English Civil wars of the 1640s) by the army of Alasdair Mac Colla, whose bro was k. during the siege. The castle was abandoned later in the 17C.

            KoS James II r1437-60 was b1431, had a conspicuous vermillion birthmark covering the left side of his face (251). Known as 'fiery face', not just for that but also his passionate temper and fierce pride as he stamped his authority on Scotland (mostly at the expense of what he saw as 'over-mighty' magnates. Since he was a minor, a regency was needed, and his mom Q Joan BEAUFORT was custodian needed to build the team. But this was a challenge since James I's ruthless attacks on leading magnates had left a huge vacuum in the ranks of the trad. ldrs of the pol. community - the earls. Usually there were 10-12, but when James I was ass. 2-21-1437, there were only 3 left (Douglas, Angus and Crawford). W/in 2yrs the 1st 2 of those would be inherited by under-age boys, and 2 other earls (Sutherland and Menteith) were being held in England as hostages for James I's still unpaid ransom. The others were vacant and already subject to acromonious disputes [hmmm, list others? Buchan, Carrick, Arran, Bothwell, Dunbar, Huntley, Lennox, Montrose, Mar, Moray, Ruthven and Eglinton]. Amid this disarray, Parliament cautiously appt'd Archibald, 5 E D as Lt-Gen, and now the pwr struggle began in earnest. He didn't seem to have the 'stomach' for politicking, so remained just a figurehead. (7/3) Marie de GUELDRES (Burgundian Princess) and t/o cntl of Scotland. His sis was had m1436 the French Dauphin, giving Scotland 'a seat at the high table of Europe' (255) and James was set on 'living high' and consolidating his own power (like rulers on the continent). His 1st act was to attack the L family, then the D family. When Wm went to Rome in 1450, James struck, seizing 2 of his castles. Wm returned and prudently 'made formal submission' to the king in Jun 1451, but it was an uneasy truce. Wm joined w/fellow noblemen John E of Ross & Lord of the Isles and Alexander E of Crawford 'to work together for their common good'. Unsurprisingly, James interpreted this as an act of potential rebellion, so in Feb 1452 he invited Wm to Stirling Castle for 'discussions', promising safe conduct but when, during the mtgs, Wm refused to renounce his alliance, James stabbed him and his courtiers finished the job (256).

Feb 1452, he was incensed that James had broken his safe-conduct promise, so he, bro Hugh and 600 retainers rode into Stirling, nailed the dishonored 'safe conduct' to a board, dragged it thru the streets, then plundered and burned the town, formally denouncing his homage to James II and offering it to England (256). But James savagely raided D lands again made 'peace' in summer 1452. James D m. his bro's widow Margaret. But by Mar 1455 the king launched another attack on D lands, determined to reduce them. James D fled to England (attainted in Scotland). He'd destroyed the Black D's and in their place promoted the Red D's e.g. George 4th E of Angus. James [III] b1451. New earldoms were created; Argyll (for the CAMPBELLs), Erroll, Morton, Rothes and Marischal (257).
