    Charles came to the town of Barton with his parents in early childhood and was educated in the common schools there. He followed farming near Waverly and was interested in a general business activity. He was active in religious work, an elder of the Presbyterian church for 30 years, and was a leading citizen of the town. He married, 4 Oct 1853, Martha W., b. 19 Jul 1831, in Barton, d. 12 Jul 1906, daughter of George W. and Catherine (Wentz) Hanna, granddaughter of John and Margaret (McCauly) Hanna. They had one son, Fred Andrew.
