BOOTH Family
The earliest known BOOTH ancestor is Adam de BOOTHE b. c1180 Booths (Lancashire, England). The BOOTH family played a part in England's Wars of the Roses (aka the Cousins' War). '2 brothers, Wm and Laurence BOOTH, became successive archbishops of York thanks to the Queen's [KoE Henry VI's wife Margaret of Anjou 1450s] favor' (AW WoR p122). In Jan 1451 an angry Commons submitted to KoE Henry VI a petition demanding the removal from court of 29 persons who'd been 'misbehaving about your royal person ...', headed by Edmund BEAUFORT, Duke of] Somerset, [Wm de la POLE, Duke of] Suffolk's widow Alice CHAUCER [gdau of poet Geoffrey], Wm BOOTH, [then] Bishop of Chester, Thomas DANIEL, John TREVELYAN, Thomas TUDDENHAM and Henry HEYDON. Many had also been denounced in [Jack] CADE's manifesto [of Cade rebellion] and were to be exiled and deprived of lands and tenements' (AW WoR p161). Tho even King Henry himself promised to 'banish his evil advisors' he did not; most avoided punishment or even trial, and Wm BOOTH was even promoted by the King's Council to AoY. The Lords was controlled by a majority of 'the court faction' so thwarted any change. They knew (and feared) that if the Duke of York had his way, he'd replace many of them with Yorkist allies e.g. the MOWBRAYs of Norfolk, the de VEREs of Oxford and the HOWARDs (162). The court was headed at the time by Somerset and the Lord Chancellor, Cardinal John KEMPE. By Aug 1457 the Queen's Chancellor was Laurence BOOTH, and pulled strings w/the Pope to have him elected (on 9/15) as Bishop of Durham (AW WoR p217). In Jun 1463 Lancastrians (assisted by Scots) were besieging Norham Castle [where Queen Margaret was hiding] on the banks of the Tweed and owned by the Bishop of Durham [Laurence BOOTH]. It was only lifted after 18 days when Warwick arrived, allowing the Queen to fall back [N] to Bamburgh. On that journey is when the famous incident w/Black Jack occurred i.e. a bandit about to kill her relented after her pleading and even led them to a cave to hide in (AW WoR p316).
After 1st St Albans 1455 ('1st blood' in WoR), there was a struggle to gain magnates to both Lancaster and York sides, and by fall 1456 the balance was tipping in Q Margaret's favor [Lancaster]. In October a great council gathered in London, w/most nobles still hoping (now w/increasing desperation) to find an escape from the horrors of civil war to some form of stability; thinking perhaps the queen's presentation of the royal family (K, Q, 3yo son) as a vehicle for the K's authority might offer a way to pull back from the precipice that 1st St Albans had opened up before them. So they agreed to appt a new set of [Lancaster] ofcrs of state, ones who gave Margaret much greater influence over admin of her husband's govt, but still acceptible to most lords. The Q's own chancellor, Laurence BOOTH, became keeper of the privy seal, the Earl of Shrewsbury (son the 'English Achilles' who'd recently been k. at Castillon) became treasurer, and the K's own confessor, Wm WAINFLEET, the scholarly and conscientious Bishop of Winchester, became chancellor (SW p364). But the lords were unwilling to call York a traitor as the Q wished. The council to oversee the 3yo's affairs included both BOOTH half-bros (Wm was Laurence's predecessor as Margaret's chancellor, and now AoY), Shrewsbury and her chf steward John, Viscount Beaumont.
I wonder if Gen. Wm BOOTH 1829-1912 83yo, famous fndr of the Salvation Army could be connected w/this line? That 1865 fnd-ing appears in 'The 100 Most Important Events in Christian History' (by Curtis, Lang & Peterson, Fleming H Revell (Baker) bks, 1991, own). Wm and wife Catherine were deeply conerned about the huge numbers of laborers who'd moved to London as part of industrialization, living in wretched conditions and largely unreached by the Anglican or even Methodist churches. These E End slums were plagued by violence, drunkenness, prostitution and unemployment. The BOOTHs had been Methodist and used many of those organizing principles while founding this new work, but adding the military aspect. In fact, it was his strict cntl that had many calling him 'General' before long. His parents were ... (cf below)
