  • Nuttert lived and worked on a farm in Engwierum, Friesland all his life. The name of the farmer was Sinnema. They were very good people. The farm was in Engwierum, Friesland, near Kollum. A (living) granddaughter of Nuttert's remembers playing with Sinnema's children. They treated the family well (unlike many other farmers). The granddaughter was friends with their daughter and son for many years. The son later got in contact with a (living) grandson.

Before he worked for Sinnema, Nuttert worked for another farmer. One year, Nuttert's farm didn't yield enough potatoes to support his family, although he had a good crop of turnips. Since his family lived off the garden, he asked the farmer if he would trade him some potatoes (for his family) for some turnips (for the farmer's cows). The farmer said no, his cows preferred potatoes! It was well known at that time that turnips were not very suitable for human consumption, but were OK for cows (i.e. not much nutritious value).

Nuttert died in his 70s of angina in 1953(?).

Here's another picture of Nuttert's family, taken around 1915. The children pictured are, from left to right, Siebe, Griet, Pietrik, Wiets and Engel.
