  • Laura was born in Denmark and came to MN in ?. Niels' parents were born in Denmark, but he was born in the U.S. (MN?). Not sure where they met (i.e. Denmark or MN), but probably MN since Niels was born there and it is unlikely he ever returned to Denmark. Around 1910, the Grunnet family moved from MN to Idaho. Mabel enjoyed telling interesting stories of their time there. That area was considered part of the "wild west" at that time and conditions were quite primitive. Later the family settled back in Minnesota (Stewart), where they lived when Mabel was college-age. I think she lived in Minneapolis by then. After her hubby died, she had to take in (mostly female) boarders to make money, paying maybe $10/mo for room and board. Also her kids helped i.e. Clifford/Mabel payed 10/mo, Leslie 10/mo, and Mary (and rich hubby) 20/mo? and other rich guy 20, so maybe total 70/mo. No SS in those days. Big house on ? street, expensive to heat, 1 bathroom upstairs, none downstairs. Dad visited the place later.

Laura's father was born at Brudager by Svendborg, Denmark 2 Feb 1839 and died in Stewart, MN 14 May 1905. His wife (and Laura's mother) Ane Johanne Nielsen was born at Gadsbjerg 4 Nov 1834 and died at Stewart, MN 22 Mar 1910.

26 Oct 2011, Dad today was remembered when he and Frank Nelson drove Dad's '56 Olds 'Super 88'? (powerful car, got via Bill Brokaw from Lansing) the 600-some miles from Grand Haven to Minneapolis? Frank was there to visit his then-fiance Lois Nelson, Dad to attend the funeral. He remembers the weather was miserable, no interstates, and wintery conditions. Nearly ran out of gas, since they drove thru the night and not many stations were open in those days i.e. 2-lane highways which went thru most towns and cities.
