HOPKINS Family

The earliest known member of this family is Hannah, the (1st and only?) wife of Major John WOOD 1743-1812 69yo (cf JohnW.html or Wood.html). Hannah's maiden name appears to have been ELLIOT and her 1st husband ? HOPKINS.

The famous poet Gerard Manley HOPKINS 1844-89 45yo was eldest of 9 kids b. to a prosperous and cultivated Victorian family, attended Oxford, under influence from JHN converted from Anglicanism to RCCism, 2yrs later [1868] entered SoJ (Jesuits), ordained a priest 1877. 3 of his poems (Pied Beauty, Spring and Fall, The Windhover) made it into Wm Harmon's 'Classic 100 Poems' (Columbia Univ, 1990/8, 360pp, bot Tu 8-14-18 FHL).

Becuse of the ELLIOT link, add some info on famous author T S ELIOT (and author George E) ... NR 10-25-18: the 'permanent things' is a phrase coined by T S ELIOT (embraced by Russell KIRK) to describe the rules and ideas that sustain civilization ...

Here's a short rvw (by Mike St THOMAS) of Alan JACOBS' bk 'The Year of Our Lord 1943: Christian Humanism in an Age of Crisis' (FR Feb 2019). Simon WEIL 1909-43 34yo (d. of hunger strike!?) once claimed that as long as we seek power, 'our conception of greatness is the very one that inspired HITLER's own life'. This grotesque overstatement is a 20C version of the Mote and Beam. In the bk AJ looks at WEIL and 4 other giants; Jacques MARITAIN 1882-1973 90yo, C S LEWIS 1898-1963 (d. same day as JFK), W H AUDEN 1907-73 66yo and T S ELIOT 1888-1965 76yo, who all sought to combat evil and rebuild the postwar West w/Chr humanism. ELIOT was b. in USA but decamped to the UK (chg'd his citizenship). His (geni.com) line goes back to Samuel E 1748-1820 b/d MA. Related?
