DoWQ: When KoE James I's dau Eliz STUART 1596-1662 66yo was 7yo, Lord and Lady HARRINGTON where chosen by Oct 1603 to be her guardians (25), great favorites of the K/Q. Lady H had a lovely 12C manor house called Coombe Abbey, frmrly a monastery, in Warwickshire, ~100mi NW of London ... Eliz's music tchr was Dr John BULL (who composed an early version of 'God Save the King') ... after m. [the future] Frederick V 1596-1632 36yo on Valentine's Day 1613 [both 16yo], they headed to his family seat Heidelberg, arriving 6/10. The HARRINGTONs left Jul but he d. en route home, 'to Eliz's great grief' (55) ... so does this H couple fit into below?

tBT: During Edw VI's reign i.e. when Protestantism was rising, was the Mancunian [from Manchester?] John BRADFORD b. c1510 to parents of gentle birth (-> Bradford.html). He attended Manchester Grammar School as a boy and was next heard of working as a paymaster under Sir John HARRINGTON of Exton, Rutlandshire, vice treas. of the English army in France between 1544-7. In this job JB is likely to have encountered the ubiquitous Richard RICH, H's superior for a few months in 1544. JB was JH's asst in Boulogne helping look after the King's interests and properties there. There seems to have been some financial irregularities (possibly by both men), and JB returned to England in 1547, enrolling on 4/8 at the Inner Temple (law school). About the same time he experienced a religious conversion, crucial roles played by Th SAMPSON and Bishop Hugh LATIMER. JB seems to have felt guity about their scheme, since he spent alot of effort from 1548-50 convincing JH to give the money back, which he did. JB studied the scriptures and pursued seminary, becoming a close associate of several Protestant scholars, including the Strasbourg theologian Martin BUCER. Then in 1550 Nicholas RIDLEY gave him a preaching license (214-6). But in Mary I's reign he fell afoul of the authorities and was burnt at Smithfield 7-1-1555.

Also keep in mind the James HARRINGTON 1611-77 who was a radical Machiavellian political theorist (aka 'English republican' or even 'English Jacobin') and wrote the book Oceana in 16??. From Rahe's MLL p198 (cf br-rne.html): "Montesquieu (1689-1755) accused Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli 1469-1527, Thomas More 1478-1535, James Harrington, and the various [other] apologists for one-man rule of falling prey to their resentments, loves, and personal predilections". Also cf Spring 2009 CRB where Rahe writes in response to James Hankins' rvw of his Against Throne and Alter from the previous issue. He refers to the so-called (by Jonathan ISRAEL) 'Radical Enlightenment' and clarifies that he (Rahe) does "not regard the American Founders as Machiavellians - tho [he does] think that the species of republican theorizing that began w/Machiavelli and was developed by Marchamont NEDHAM, Thomas HOBBES, James HARRINGTON, and others thereafter had a profound impact on their thinking ... [who] made a concerted attempt to shunt aside the Christian religion and make philosophy central to political life ... articulat[ing] a critique of both ancient theory AND practice ... [the American] doctrine of the separation of powers was an attempt to find a middle path between ... ancient republican practice and the [more modern] critique [by the radicals] ... tho there's a sharp break between ancient/modern theory, the break between ancient/modern practice is less sharp". The Americans agreed w/Mach that politics was indeed a power struggle, but also wanted to "deliberately leave space (albeit circumscribed space) for ... [the ancient concept of rational] public deliberation concerning the advantageous, just, good". Connected?

I think this is the same Lord/Lady H who served as guardians of Eliz 1596-1662 (later the Winter Queen) and her older bro Henry PoW 1594-1612 (Eliz' early-life guardians were L/L LIVINGSTON p13). DoWQ p25 says they were chosen for this role Oct 1603 shortly after KoE James t/o (they were 'grt faves' of James). Lady H had a lovely 12C manor house called Coombe Abbey, frmrly a monastery, in Warwickshire, ~100mi NW of London. They were well cared for there e.g. John BULL was their music tchr (he composed 'God Save the King' in his spare time). On 4-3-1604 7yo Eliz made her 1st visit to the nearby town of Coventry. Nov 1605 was the Guy FAWKES 'Gunpowder Plot' (Eliz was 8yo). They'd planned to capture young Eliz as their 'puppet' (w/royal legitimacy) afterward. Lord H was personally involved in their schooling, he was 'cultivated and erudite, w/a gentleman's passion for the natural sciences' (30). Her time at Coombe Abbey was a happy time for her, and [Prot] religion was emphasized by the pious H's. They made a point of stressing charity and liberality, so altho she was showered w/gifts, Eliz never displayed selfishness, and was known thruout her life for her generosity. By 13yo she was spending more time at court, as was customary. She idolized older bro Henry, hale and hearty v. younger bro Chas who was frail and sickly (fam had trouble finding guardians for a boy 'who so plainly was going to die' (32). At [just turned] 14yo Eliz got her 1st m. offer [Sep 1610] when KoS offered his eldest son and heir [almost 16yo] Prince Gustavus Adolphus (later famous for turning the tide in 30Yrs War). But since Sweden was the sworn enemy of Denmark, of which Eliz's uncle Christian (mom's bro) was king, it was nixed (by James I). There followed a series of suitors - minor Dutch princes of various shapes and sizes (Maurice of Nassau was corpulent, middle-aged and balding; Eliz was surely glad to see him go [but apparently he was interested, his dates are 1567-1625 so he would've been 43yo in 1610!]) ... [hmmm, 1st mention of him in this bk, right?] ... Once it was decided she'd m. the Winter King (Frederick Palsgrave), her entourage reached the outskirts of Heidelberg 6-10-1613 (she not quite 17yo). L/L H stayed awhile longer than most, but eventually were ensnared in a courtly clash (caused by Eliz' higher 'status' than the Palsgrave's) and departed Jul 1613, a mere 6wks after their arrival. To Eliz' grt grief, Lord H d. of fever en route back to England (53-5, hmmm, above says 1612 but I still think its same guy, above geni mentioned Lord H was guardian of PoW).
