DOUGLAS Family

James DOUGLAS 'the Black/Good' one of Scotland's greatest heroes o/l

Douglas Castle, St Bride's Church, Douglas / The Castles of Scotland, Coventry / Goblinshead o/l
only tower ruins remain today

The earliest known DOUGLAS ancestor was Sir James 'the Black' (or 'the Good') DOUGLAS, Robert the BRUCE's greatest captain, ldr at Bannockburn 1314, carried Robert's heart to Holy Land (while en route to fight in the Crusades), k1330 in battle w/Moors of Granada) m. ?. Other family stories ...

Douglas, AZ is in the far SE corner of the state, just across the Mexican border from Agua Prieta (cf DayTmr Feb 2018). It was named for mining pioneer Dr James D 1837-1918 b. Quebec d. NYC. The area was orig settled 18C by Spanish as Presidio de San Bernadino i.e. settled 1776, but abandoned 1780!? (hostile natives?) The US Army est. its Camp S B in the late 19C, and in 1910 built Camp D nearby. The town was fnd'd as a smelter for copper ore extracted from nearby Bisby, AZ. The orig co (name?) was fnd'd 1905 and the Copper Queen mine operated 1904-31 when it was bot by Phelps Dodge corp. They ran it til 1987 when it was closed (huge strike 1984?). In 1916 Pancho Villa threatened the town, thinking it had helped his foes in the recent battle of Agua Prieta. On 6-23-26 Canadian-American celebrity minister Aimee Semple McPHERSON was found collapsed on a road near Agua Prieta (after having disappeared from Los Angeles, CA, she claimed kidnapping ...).

Also, the Douglas Aircraft Co (DAC) was fnd'd 1921 in Santa Monica, CA by Donald Wills DOUGLAS Sr 1892-1981 88yo b. Brooklyn, NY d. Palm Beach, CA. He was the son of a cashier (no name given in wiki) who worked for Natl Park Bank. DAC merged w/McDONELL Aircraft Co in 1967 to form McD-D, which then merged w/BA in 1997. No info on ancestry at wiki.

A pamphlet from Protection Island in Nanaimo, BC harbor says it has a history of coal mining, w/an active mine there from late 19C to 1938. Aka Douglas Island (named for James D, 1st Gov of Vanc Island and BC), it was renamed PI in 1960 i.e. protects harbor from heavy seas. Today there are 350 full-time residents, many of whom commute daily via ferry to work/school. The island features beautiful beaches, forested parks and an abundance of birds and other wildlife. 10 (164x-1xxx) STEWART, Alexander [of] Galloway b. Ballymena? - DOUGLAS, Lady Mary (dau of ?, this entry just added yesterday 9-19-17!? by ? Jilit?)

After KoS James IV invaded England and his army defeated, and he himself k. 9-9-1513 at the Battle of Flodden, his infant son succeeded him as James V. Scotland was thus again under a regency (as had mostly been the case there for over a century), a kingdom dominated by huge interrelated families, notably the STEWARTs, the DOUGLASes and the HAMILTONs (tLTP p4). Seems likely that Lady Mary D ties into that key ruling family somehow, possibly via Earls of Angus branch shown below?

Regents of Scotland:
...
1513 KoS James IV k. at Flodden (wife Margaret TUDOR t/o but -> Civil War)
1515-28 John STEWART, 2 D Albany c1481-1536, gson of KoS James II
[tLTP p14 summer 1517 Albany to France to care for his sick wife, leaves James HAMILTON, 1st E of Arran as pres. of Scot Council (so Regent?) w/Angus also on Council, but 2 couldn't get along, constant feuding]
1528-42 KoS James V b1512 (he t/o at 16yo, right?)
1542-54 James HAMILTON, 2 E Arran, D of Chatelherault c1516-75
1554-60 Marie de GUISE 1515-60 (for dau Mary QoS)
1560-? LotC (Ch. figurehead, real pwr Moray and KNOX)
1570-1 Matthew STUART, 4 E Lennox 1516-71 m. MD
1571-2 John ERSKINE, 1st E of Mar d1572
1572-81 James DOUGLAS, Master of Morton, later 4 E Morton c1516-81
...

Descent Chart(s)

tLTP p24 mentions Wm DOUGLAS, 1st E of D, son of Sir James D who'd carried Robt BRUCE's heart to the Holy Land. Wm had built Tantallon Castle in the 1350s, a magnificent and forbidding fortress spectacularly situated high on a rocky headland overlooking the Firth of Forth and the Bass Rock, an island in the sea to the E of Scotland. It was still the main fortress of the 6th E, father of MD. An even earlier Wm D fought for HRE1 Charlemagne (p4)!

MM Scot discusses many early 'Earl DOUGLASes':

Hmmm, cf Comyn: 22 Alex COMYN c1217-1289/90 ~72yo 2 E Buchan, 6 E Northumberland? m. Elizabeth (Isabel) de QUINCY b1214 d. >Apr 1282, dau of Roger de Q and Helen of Galloway, Alex/Eliz parents of 21 Elizabeth C b1244 m. Gilbert de UMFREVILLE 1244-96 52yo bur. Elinor (Alienor) DOUGLAS? d1368, so did Elinor m. 22 Sir James D below, passing E of Angus title to him?

So 2 JCS and 8 Adam SMITH are 17th cousins, 6x removed (common anc. 26 Arch. D/Marg C).

Or 2 JCS and 14 MD (of tLTP) are 6th cousins, 12x removed (common anc. 21 James D/?).

p252: 2 distinct branches of DOUGLAS family in 15C; 'Black D's' and 'Red D's'. To simplify, Blacks were E's of D, Red's were E's of Angus. Both lines descended from the 'good' Sir James 'The Black D' who'd carried Robt BRUCE's heart (so called due to his swarthy complexion). The 'Blacks' descended from an illeg son of that 'good' Sir James, the 'Reds' (for their red hair) from an illeg son of James 2nd E D and hero of Otterburn 8-19-1388.

MM Scot notes: James II's chf counsellor (proto-PM) was his kinsman Bishop James KENNEDY, still today viewed as 'a byword in Scotland for wisdom and humanity' (related? cf Stewart.txt). The crown by 1455 had unprecedented pwr and prestige, his new hi-tech artillery from TDR made him master of his barons' castles. His last 5yrs were relatively peaceful. But the English WoR broke out 1455, affecting Scotland. At 1st England focused on fighting in France, good for Scotland. James II even made a few raids S trying to recover 2 major Scot fortresses held by the English: Berwick and Roxburgh. But after Northampton 7-10-1460 James decided to assemble a huge army for the purpose, and it was near Roxburgh where one of his cannons exploded and k. him Su 8/3 29yo. p/u p260
