The Danes

From 600-800 AD, kingdoms developed in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Though the Danes had done some earlier raiding (e.g. Frisia 570), during the Viking Age (800-1100 AD) this activity exploded, as Danish Vikings invaded Frisia, Britain and Normandy. Geologically, "Norway is mountainous, Sweden is flatter, w/farmland and forests, Denmark is dotted w/100s of small islands" (VT p8).

According to legend, "Harald [Fairhair]'s gmother Asa sent a servant to murder her husband, Gudrod the Hunting King [hmmm, same as Gudrod 'The Magnificent' above?], by running him through with a spear. She had ample reason, for Gudrod had claimed her by killing her brother and her father (himself a king [who?]) and carrying her off like a common concubine. Restored to dignity by the bloodletting, Asa lived out her days in regal splendor (she is believed to be the Asa who was buried in royal splendor AD 834 in the Oseberg - i.e. Asa's Mound - ship, found in 1904, now in Oslo, Norway) ... Harald learned further lessons in majesty from his father, Halvdan the Black. When Halvdan came to power, he was just one of many petty kings living in Norway. But his was perhaps the finest domain in the land - Vestfold ... Profiting by that inheritance, Halvdan spent his reign subduing the kings of neighboring territories ... When he d. at 40yo, his people quartered his corpse, so each province would have a part to bury and thus enrich their lands. Harald was only 10yo when he succeeded ... in latter half of 9C. His uncle, Guthorm, served as regent for awhile, but Harald soon asserted himself [around age 12, disgruntled Kveldulf/Thorolf (father/son) later k. Guthorm's 2 young sons, beloved by Harald p44] ... [when Harald sought] Gyda, dau of King Erik of Hordaland in SW Norway ... [she agreed to become his wife only when he had] laid under himself all Norway ... grateful to Gyda for reminding him of his duty, in true Viking fashion, he rose to her challenge [this became his gauntlet thrown down, which he eventually accomplished, but only by killing Gyda's father in battle, by which time he had 8 other wives by alliance agreements] ... Eventually, he divorced Gyda along with the others, so that he could wed a Danish princess called Ragnhild the Mighty, who was apparently too grand to tolerate any domestic rivals" (WLL pp15-8, hmmm, same as Ragnhild wife of Rohnvald I, perhaps at his d. in 894?). Harold's conquest displaced many proud jarls, who then migrated to the Scottish isles, the Faeroe Islands, Iceland, etc.
